What is IB

An Introduction to the International Baccalaureate

The IB aspires to help schools develop well-rounded students with character who respond to challenges with optimism and an open mind, are confident in their own identities, make ethical decisions, join with others in celebrating our common humanity and are prepared to apply what they learn in real-world, complex and unpredictable situations.

The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students, aged 16 to 19, for success at university and life beyond. It has been designed to address the intellectual, social, emotional and physical well-being of students. The programme has gained recognition and respect from the world’s leading universities.

In order to be considered an IB school, schools must be a member of the International Baccalaureate Organization. This entails paying an annual licensing fee and offering curriculum approved by the International Baccalaureate Organization.

IB schools are:

  • Committed to the IB philosophy with a focus on international studies;
  • Offer a rigorous curriculum which encourages student inquiry and curiosity;
  • Have IB trained teachers who are continuously participating in professional development opportunities.

IB classes are college-level classes that students take during their junior and senior years. The IB program focuses on internationalism, globalization and critical thinking skills necessary to be successful in the 21st century world.

Eugene International High School is one of 19 International Baccalaureate Schools in Oregon. The International Baccalaureate program is open to all interested students who are academically motivated.

Courses in the junior and senior years in Eugene IHS are IB approved and students will receive the IB designation on their transcript. Students also have the opportunity to register for IB testing to earn college credit. Colleges and universities value the International Baccalaureate program because they know of its overall rigor, making IB students extremely competitive in college admissions. Nearly every North American university has a credit policy regarding IB and increasingly gives weight to IB in determining admissions. We hope that your student will seriously consider participating in IB testing. It is a decision that should, ultimately, be made by the student, but advice and encouragement from a parent is always helpful.
